Dementia-Friendly Spiritually-Oriented Palliative Care Study (SPACES)

Dr. Jenny Palmer, Institute for Aging Research

Funded by the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation

This project is conducted through the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston, MA.  Seeking critical stakeholder perspectives, Dr. Jenny Palmer will lead semi-structured qualitative interviews with (1) dyads of family care partners and persons with dementia (when able to participate) to explore the role of spirituality in illness experiences and palliative care needs, and (2) health care providers (i.e., spiritual care providers from multiple faiths, medical practitioners, nurses, social workers) to explore their perspectives on attending to spiritually-oriented palliative care needs of patients with dementia and their families.  The ultimate goal of Dr. Palmer’s research agenda is to inform future development of interfaith-sensitive and dementia-appropriate training curricula and practices within spiritually-oriented palliative care.
