Job Summary:

Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced spiritual care specialist to develop programs and respond to the spiritual needs of patients and their families, faculty, staff, allied health students (as appropriate), and other health care team members.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $61,200 – $130,600 (Annual Rate).

Under general supervision, the Staff Chaplain provides direct spiritual care, crisis and emotional support to patients, their families, interdisciplinary team members, and allied health students, supporting primarily the inpatient population at the Mount Zion Medical Center, including co-coverage of the inpatient portion of Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital and supporting a meaning-making group there with interdisciplinary colleagues. This position will also flex to the Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus when triaging is required. The Chaplain supports the Department in clinically mentoring ACPE Clinical Chaplain Learners, covering Voalte / pager on-call during day shifts, quarterly overnight or day on-call shifts at Parnassus or Mission Bay, and supporting goals of care interdisciplinary team meetings. As an experienced spiritual care specialist the Chaplain offers education and fosters conversation and clarification on cultural, ethical, religious, and other topics/dynamics that can affect patient care, family interactions, and interdisciplinary team and allied health student performance/resiliency. They will assist in developing and maintaining community relations, coordination of community spiritual leaders, and contracted Roman Catholic Priest referrals to meet patient needs via telehealth or in-person visits.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or its equivalent in relevant training and graduate-level experience.

Completion of at least four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education, accredited by the ACPE (The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education).

One or more years of experience working as a Healthcare Chaplain, post-supervised training.

Full knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short-term counseling to patients and families in a clinical environment.

Skilled at providing spiritual support and guidance on the issues of death, dying, grief, loss, and disability.

Thorough knowledge of a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, and of giving appropriate spiritual care in a multi-faith clinical setting.

Thorough knowledge of the ethical and confidentiality issues involved with clinical chaplaincy.

Flexibility and adaptability to remain calm, and deal effectively with changing situations involving crises and stress.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with and accept people of diverse beliefs, cultures, ethnicities, ages, and health conditions.

Ability to work independently with patients and families, while also participating in the healthcare team providing coordinated care.

Thorough organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills.

Thorough knowledge of spiritual assessment models, solid spiritual assessment skills, and the ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, spiritual assessments of patients/families to the health care team.

Demonstrated ability to establish connections with key persons quickly and the ability to function successfully in crisis/trauma situations, demonstrating compassion, flexibility, sensitivity, and command when needed.

Demonstrated skill in assessing and meeting the needs of an acute inpatient psychiatric setting —direct work with patients individually and in groups; collaboration with interdisciplinary staff.

Advanced chaplaincy judgment and triage skills.

Excellent communication and spiritual counseling skills.

The ability to work Saturday-Wednesday, onsite in San Francisco.

License/Certification

License(s): Endorsement, ordination, commissioning or official recognition by one’s affiliation group to function as a professional chaplain. Maintains good standing in affiliation group.

Certification(s): Provisional or Board Certification, or eligibility for such certification, with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: the Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC). Maintains good standing through service in Board Certification organization. If the incumbent is not already certified, the incumbent will work towards Board Certification within 18 months on the job.
