Location: Bronson Battle Creek Hospital
Department: Spiritual Care
Schedule: Two 12-hour shifts (one 11 a.m.–11:30 p.m. and one 8 a.m.–8:30 p.m.)

About the Role

The Staff Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff across all ages and faith backgrounds. This role helps individuals draw on their personal beliefs to cope with illness, trauma, stress, and loss, while ensuring compassionate, holistic care as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

 

Key Responsibilities

Assess the spiritual and emotional needs of patients and families.

Provide comfort, guidance, and presence during times of illness, trauma, or grief.

Visit newly admitted patients and respond to special requests for spiritual care.

Offer regular support in critical care and waiting areas.

Respond to Code Blue and trauma alerts to provide crisis intervention.

Communicate with families during medical emergencies.

Accurately document chaplaincy services in patient medical records (Epic).

Participate in interdisciplinary care team meetings.

Collaborate with healthcare professionals to integrate spiritual care into treatment plans.

Provide culturally sensitive and age-appropriate care for all patients.

Educate patients and families on Power of Attorney for Health Care and assist with completion.

Assist families in times of loss, including coordination with funeral homes and providing emotional support to staff.

 

Qualifications

Required:

Demonstrated empathy, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work collaboratively in a healthcare setting and respond effectively in crisis situations.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Epic (electronic medical record).

Preferred:

Master of Divinity or equivalent from a graduate school accredited by a Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) member.

Minimum of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from an Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)-accredited program.

Board Certification through one of the following:

Association of Professional Chaplains (APC)

National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC)

National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)

Experience in a healthcare chaplaincy role.

 

Work Environment

Involves regular standing, walking, and light lifting (up to 20 lbs).

May require assisting with patient movement and responding to urgent situations.

Requires focus and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment with frequent emotional demands.
