Spiritual Care Training in

Historically Marginalized Communities

Funded by E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation

2025-2026

In partnership with ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education and Buen Vivir CPE, this project broadens the training opportunities open to chaplains who wish to provide meaningful spiritual care but have historically faced significant challenges to entering and advancing in the profession.

At a conference for leading chaplains of color held in December 2023, attendees identified a number of key themes as barriers to a full realization of the potential of chaplains of color:

  • The need for innovation in cultural responsiveness
  • Community engagement
  • Education and training
  • Intersectionality

This program strengthens spiritual care training opportunities through four activities:

  1. Establish an Advisory Group to guide the content and outreach of this project
  2. Offer two Conversation Circle cohorts for early career chaplains with demonstrated potential for leadership and contributions to the profession
  3. Create a dedicated online community for historically marginalized chaplains, including mentorship by leading chaplains across sectors of spiritual care provision
  4. Host free, open to the public webinars on the core problems faced by historically marginalized chaplains and our approach to offering impactful solutions

This work begins to describe the history of chaplains of colors and provide resources for current chaplains and for educators training future chaplains. We include an online reader, a working paper, a recorded lecture series, and a report on our conversation circle model of professional discussion. Learn more here.
