ACPE Certified Educator

Department: Clinical Pastoral Education Training Program Division: Nursing Reports to: AVP of Medicine and Mental Health Services

Position Summary

The ACPE Certified Educator is a certified educator to the Pastoral Care Program. The ACPE educator is on site to plan, teach, and run the CPE Program. The ACPE Educator supervises residents, participates in patient care, and promotes and sustains twenty-four-hour spiritual care coverage. The ACPE educator participates in department and hospital activities. The ACPE educator supervises ACPE candidates to become certified educators.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master of Divinity or related advanced degree

Licensure, Certification & Registration:

  • ACPE Certified Educator (CE)
  • BCC through APC, NACC, or NAJC preferred

Experience: Experience in an academic medical center preferred

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Able to manage all aspects of the CPE program
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise CPE students
  • Coordinate students’ clinical experiences in collaboration with other program faculty
  • Ensure compliance with all ACPE Accreditation requirements
  • Oversee the PAG’s functioning and member participation
  • Serve as a member of the multifaith chaplaincy team
  • Assume supervision of a resident group
  • Evaluate and recommend spiritual care research opportunities
  • Acclimate to environment of an academic medical center

Compliance with ACPE Standards

  • Remains in compliance with all ACPE standards, policies, and procedures

  • Demonstrates compliance during site visits

Supervision/Training

  • Supervises students, chaplain residents, chaplain interns, and educator candidates
  • Promotes and sustains the chaplain resident program
  • Partners with the Spiritual Care Manager to sustain 24/7 pastoral care coverage
  • Supervises students in their spiritual care to patients and staff
  • Applies both individual and group supervision for students’ personal and professional growth

Clinical Education

  • Provides theological and professional education using clinical methods of learning
  • Develops students to practice in diverse contexts of spiritual care
  • Develops students’ understanding and ability to apply clinical methods of learning

Spiritual Formation

  • Develops students’ awareness of themselves as ministers and how their ministry affects others
  • Develops students’ awareness of how their attitudes, values, assumptions, strengths, and opportunities affect their spiritual care
  • Develops students’ ability to engage and apply support, confrontation, and clarification within the peer group for integration of personal attributes and pastoral functioning

Organization and Time Management

  • Adheres to the AMC Corporate Compliance Plan, including internal reporting of non-compliance
  • Assists with training new personnel as directed
  • Reviews and responds to quality monitors in accordance with departmental policy

  • Maintains strict adherence to the Albany Medical Center Confidentiality policy

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Immediate supervision over a small group of assigned employees performing similar tasks (more than 20% of time spent assigning, reviewing, or checking staff work)
  • Supervises a small group of employees, assigning and maintaining workflow; makes recommendations regarding employment and evaluation of others
  • Instructs and/or trains other employees, including assigning, checking, and evaluating performance during the training period

  • Requires a high degree of mental and visual concentration
  • Requires lifting or moving light weight (up to 20 pounds)
  • Requires high manual coordination
  • Requires an average range of motion
  • Allows for variation in positioning and tasks
  • Requires occasional repetitive motion
  • Occasional exposure to elements such as odor, noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes, or airborne pathogens
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous materials
  • Involves exposure to blood and body fluids; standard precautions must be used
  • Requires the ability to hear soft and loud noises
