Chaplain, Oregon State Hospital
I work as a chaplain at the Oregon State Hospital. The state hospital is a forensic and civil residential psychiatric facility, which houses over 600 patients.
When I began my work as a chaplain, the hospital had started to offer therapeutic and recovery-focused groups for patient participation. In 2011, I wrote my first spiritual care group curriculum.
Since then, I have written fifteen curricula for OSH chaplains to use. I have mentored CPE students in writing curriculum for groups, which they then facilitate for patients. At the APC/NACC 2018 Joint Conference, I gave a 90-minute presentation titled, Spiritual Care Groups in a Psychiatric Setting.
The presentation was at capacity and received positive reviews from participants.
Writing curriculum from a Chaplaincy Care perspective gives me a creative outlet that is patient-centered and therapeutically supportive.
