July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025

Summary

The Chaplaincy Innovation Lab is partnering with the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES) to develop an empirical picture of chaplaincy in Episcopal Schools in the United States. This project will focus on several key questions, including:

  • Who are chaplains in Episcopal schools in the United States?
  • What are the nature of these positions and how do chaplains experience them?
  • How are chaplains being utilized and are there enough patterns to name some best practices?
  • How are chaplains in Episcopal schools relating to one another, local dioceses, and local parishes/congregations?
  • What are the biggest barriers or challenges for chaplains today?
  • What could be done to better support these chaplains and draw more people to these positions?

Outcomes

The project will achieve three goals:

1. Clarify the current state of the field of Episcopal school chaplaincy, including demographics and “pipelines” into the work;

2. Identify a number of models whereby chaplains are utilized in Episcopal schools; and

3. Begin suggested best practices for spiritual care in Episcopal school settings.

The project will produce an eBook and a public webinar to report its findings and make them available to a wider public.
