Sarah Byrne-Martelli, DMin BCC-PCHAC
Palliative Care Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator, Massachusetts General Hospital
I am an Orthodox Christian, musical director, and birth doula. I’ve served in Hospice and Palliative Care since 2002. I once attended the baptism of a baby whose birth I’d attended; later that day, I officiated the funeral of a Hospice patient whose death I’d attended. I am blessed by this work. I am nourished by the courage, love, and endurance of the people we serve. I love chaplaincy research and quality improvement. Yet at the end of the day, it always comes back to the encounter with the person in front of me: the “still, small voice” and presence of the holy in the midst of sorrow and joy.
