What a Chaplain Looks Like

Flora Washburn

Flora Washburn

Manager, Spiritual Care, Marian Regional Medical Center

Over the years I held many careers: mom, school and community volunteer, sales clerk, administrative assistant and wife. Ministry and service were important to me. The kindness of a chaplain who visited my mother-in-law convinced me that I wanted to be a hospital chaplain. I attended CPE in 2005 at St Joseph Healthcare in Lexington, KY. The program affirmed the calling of chaplaincy in my life. I was able to stay with St Joseph’s after CPE and was assigned to St Joseph Berea for mission and spiritual care. These were great years. In 2013, we returned to California where I began working for Dignity Health at Arroyo Grande and French Hospitals. A few years later I became manager of our department, serving Marian Regional Medical Center as well. Chaplaincy is the calling I believe God prepared me for through life experiences. It is honor to serve the team I lead; it is a great privilege to come along patients, families and staff to listen, support, cry and laugh together. I am so grateful for the journey that led me to where I am today.
