Music for the Soul: An Evening with Michele Smart (Gourley)
Join the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab and Michele Star (Gourley), musician, medical doctor, and chaplain resident for an evening of music to uplift and heal the soul. Michele will perform original compositions and discuss how music informs her approach to spiritual care.
Michele is a nationally-ranked mountain dulcimer player, classically-trained percussionist and holds degrees in medicine, public health and theology. Michele currently serves as a chaplain resident at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Before pursuing a chaplain residency, she was a Fellow of Theology, Medicine and Culture at Duke University. Additionally she is former Director of Faith-Based Initiatives for the Tennessee Department of Health.
She is a graduate of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Leadership Bluegrass initiative and has coordinated wellness initiatives for IBMA’s National Conference since 2018. Her musical journeys have led her to write songs and perform in a variety of places from small, remote fishing villages in Iceland to presidential inaugurations and several places along the way.
