Early infection and death rates from COVID-19 failed to include senior care and nursing centers, even as nurses worked on the front lines to save those under their care. A New York Times tally on April 17 estimated that 20% of fatalities occurred in nursing homes, assisted- living facilities, memory care facilities, retirement and senior communities and long-term rehabilitation facilities. Unlike hospitals, these systems were unequipped and not designed to handle the onslaught, and nurses and nursing assistants have been the primary medical staff working in these facilities, often without adequate protection. And even most hospitals were swamped by the pandemic. Presenters and more information available here.
