What a Chaplain Looks Like

Robert Shenk

Rev. Robert Shenk, MDiv, BCC

Chaplain Professional Development Specialist,  Bon Secours Mercy Health, Richmond, Virginia

Robert (Bob) is an ordained Teaching Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and is Board Certified with the Association of Professional Chaplains. A native Californian, he made the trek after High School to Boston College and received his B.A. in Theology. Though Bob is Presbyterian, he is greatly influenced by Jesuit spirituality and Catholic social teaching, particularly its emphasis on solidarity with the marginalized and challenging systemic injustice. He holds and M.Div from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and completed his first unit of CPE at Beverly Hospital on the north shore of Massachusetts. After later completing his CPE residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center, he joined the chaplain team at Bon Secours Mercy Health in Richmond. Since he joined Bon Secours in 2011, he has served at the bedside with patients and their loved ones, coordinated the Spiritual Care Partners and Sacred Passages volunteer training programs, and worked on many special ministry projects. Bob has a passion for teaching and his new role as Professional Development Specialist has given him the opportunity to teach and empower his colleagues in their professional development. For his own professional development, he is excited to be pursuing his Doctor of Ministry at Brite Divinity School (Texas Christian University).

Bob resides in Richmond with his dear wife and three sons (four sons if you count Chewbacca, his feisty miniature poodle).
