Prof. Dr. Iqbal Akhtar, PhD
Professor and Muslim Chaplain — Florida International University
Iqbal Akhtar is an Imam, Muslim Chaplain, Professor, and Executive Director with extensive experience in academic and spiritual leadership. Since 2012, he has been a Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Florida International University, where his expertise includes applied religious ethics and interfaith dialogue. He is also the Executive Director of The East-West Foundation, a spiritual and cultural organization dedicated to human flourishing and cultural preservation in Black Miami. His past roles include serving as a Lay Muslim Chaplain for the U.S. Air Force Academy from 2007-8 and as an Assistant Imam for the Slidell Masjid al-Islam from 2002-6, providing spiritual guidance, counseling, and community leadership in both positions. Dr. Akhtar holds a PhD in Divinity from the University of Edinburgh, an MA in Political Science and International Relations from Tulane University, a BA in Religious Studies from the University of Denver, and a BA in Political Science and Jewish, Islamic, and Near Eastern Studies from Washington University in St. Louis.
