What a Chaplain Looks Like

Jeffery Uhler

Jeffery Uhler, MDiv, BCC

Lead Chaplain and Clinical Ethicist, Aurora BayCare Medical Center

I have always been humbled by the information people share when someone takes the time to listen. Whether serving in my role as Chaplain or as Clinical Ethicist, people want to know they are not alone, that someone cares enough to hear their story. This is the holy ground I am privileged to walk each day. Leading a department is secondary to this primary work.

I am certified through BCCi (APC), and serve as Chaplain Lead for one hospital in a large hospital system. I also serve as Clinical Ethicist on a team of ethicists throughout the system. Having this dual role provides a many opportunities to work with people in their most vulnerable health situations. It allows for a great deal of innovation in time usage, as well as creativity to meet people where they are.

I am a past president of the Wisconsin Chaplaincy Association and continue to serve on the board. I enjoy writing book reviews for APC, and mentoring ACPE students at our clinical site.
