Eight years ago, while responding to a Code 13, a distress call that indicated a violent or combative interaction, I saw a woman dragged into seclusion. As the officers pulled her away, all I could remember was her screaming, ‘Stop! I am a mother!’ Since then, I have dedicated my life as a spiritual caregiver and clinician to seeking justice, giving voice, and creating space for the marginalized, seriously mentally ill, incarcerated, and institutionalized. I am an ACPE Certified Educator and Board-Certified Chaplain who loves teaching current and future chaplains the art of finding the divine needle deep within the haystack called mental illness.
