What a Chaplain Looks Like

Rev. Colleen Hallagan Prueninger

Associate Dean for Religious & Spiritual Life and Director of Student Engagement, Stanford University

I can’t imagine work more fulfilling (and fun!) than accompanying students during their university years.

Chaplaincy work at Stanford exists at an intersection of tasks and practices, engaged by folks with variety of titles (that may or may not include “chaplain”).

On any given day you can find me working with students from our 31 student groups, preparing University Public Worship, advocating for student centered policies, facilitating reading groups or (before pandemic times) baking and handing out 300 homemade-chocolate chip cookies in our multi-faith center on Friday afternoons.

I am passionate about cultivating communities of belonging and life-giving relationships that integrate, mind, heart, and body during an essential season of identity and faith formation for our students.

University chaplaincy is the BEST and I am grateful to have the opportunity to do this work with and for our fabulous students.
