What a Chaplain Looks Like

Ylisse Cheney Bess

Chaplain Ylisse Cheney Bess

Chaplain, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

I come from praying people.

People who pray with their hands and feet through the protest of state-sanctioned violence.

People who pray with their voices through speeches that condemn white supremacist and patriarchal laws, policies, and ideologies that are in opposition to the health and wellbeing of people and the environment.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, xenophobia, and racism, my tradition teaches me that, “We are prayers, hopes, and dreams, made flesh.”

I exercise my faith as a chaplain when I commit through words and actions, to fostering a liberating environment where we are all empowered to advocate for ourselves and others.
