Mapping and Building the Field of Jewish Chaplaincy Strategic Planning Group

This gathering of Jewish spiritual care providers, educators, and researchers advised the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab on its project to map and support the field of Jewish chaplaincy in the United States. The results of this project, which offer both an overview of the history and present of Jewish spiritual care as well as recommendations for the future, can be read here.

Much of the work of Jewish chaplains is unknown, even within the Jewish community. These chaplains do not conceive of themselves as a single professional group. In this mapping, we address the definitional complexities of the work and then outline where Jewish chaplains work today and where they might work moving forward. We focus on the people and the institutions key to Jewish chaplaincy with attention to the content, financial and institutional status, and long-term viability of their work.
